چکیده

The high price, long design and development cycles, programming difficulty and high maintenance cost of supercomputers limit their range of potential applications. Recent advances in Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) have made feasible the development of highperformance and programmable parallel systems on a programmable chip (PSOPC). PSOPC’s yield highperformance at low cost for many parallel applications. We present in this paper the design and implementation of our HERA (HEterogeneous Reconfigurable Architecture) machine that employs FPGAs to allow the simultaneous execution of a variety of parallel processing modes, including SIMD (Single-Instruction, Multiple-Data), MIMD (Multiple-Instruction, Multiple-Data) and MSIMD (Multiple-SIMD). The processing element is centered on a single-precision IEEE 754 floating-point unit (FPU) and employs a 7-stage pipeline. To demonstrate the robustness and viability of our approach, we propose a data partitioning scheme and employ mixedmode scheduling for Cannon’s matrix-matrix multiplication algorithm with matrices of arbitrary size and shape. Performance results on our 64-PE machine that employs a dual-FPGA system are better than the optimized performance on a dual-Xeon PC.

Exploiting mixed-mode parallelism for matrix operations on the HERA architecture through reconfiguration

Recent advances in multi-million-gate platform FPGAs have made it possible to design and implement complex parallel systems on a programmable chip (PSOPCs) that also incorporate hardware floating-point units (FPUs). These options take advantage of resource reconfiguration. In contrast to the majority of the FPGA community that still employs reconfigurable logic to develop algorithm-specific cir...

Mixed-Mode Scheduling for Parallel LU Factorization of Sparse Matrices on the Reconfigurable HERA Computer

HERA (HEterogeneous Reconfigurable Architecture) is an FPGA-based mixed-mode reconfigurable computing system that we have designed and implemented for the simultaneous execution of a variety of parallel processing modes. These modes are SIMD (Single-Instruction, Multiple-Data), MIMD (Multiple-Instruction, MultipleData) and M-SIMD (Multiple-SIMD). Each processing element (PE) is centered on a si...

Utilizing Reconfigurable Hardware Processors via Grid Services

Computational grids typically consist of nodes utilizing ordinary processors such as the Intel Pentium. Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) are able to perform certain compute-intensive tasks very well due to their inherent parallel architecture, often resulting in orders of magnitude speedups. This paper explores how FPGAs can be transparently exposed for remote use via grid services, by in...

FPGAs as Computing Platform

Since the discovery of Moore’s Law advances in hardware have shown to fulfill it accurately. However, maintaining that fact seems to be increasingly difficult[1]. The von Neumann architecture suffers from drawbacks that have become known as the von Neumann Syndrome[2]. Inefficient data transmission through the memory wall and instruction-stream-based sequencing are the source of its illness. To...
